Haliç’e Avrupalılar tarihte “Golden Horn” yani “Altın Boynuz” ismini vermişlerdir. Bu ismin çıkışı ise Yunan efsanesine dayanır. Kocası Zeus’un güzel İo ile aşk yaşadığını öğrenen baş tanrıça Hera, İo’yu boynuzlu bir ineğe çevirir. Başına da bir sineği musallat eder. İo, sinekten kaçmak isterken başını bir sağa bir sola toslarken toprak yarıklara ayrılır. İşte bu yarıklardan Haliç doğar. Sonra İo nihayet kıyıya çıkar… Bir kız çocuğu dünyaya getirir… Kızı Keroessa adı zamanla “keros” yani “boynuz”a dönüşür. İşte Haliç’in hikayesi burada başlar. Eskiler, İo'yu Ay ile ilişkilendirmiştir. Ay, koruma, sevgi, şevkat duyguları dengeleme adına çok güçlüdür ve sembol olarak dişilliği destekler. Bir yandan da içimizdeki dengeli eril ve dişilliği tamamlar. Çünkü boynuz aynı zamanda Koç burcu enerjisinin sembolüdür.
